Test: Fluorescent in situ hybridization – Haematological
Alternate names: FISH
Description: Hybridization of fluorescent test probe to specific locus on chromosome.
Clinical: Leukemia, MDS. Probes available in this lab: BCR/ABL; t(8;21); del 13q14; 14q32 break apart - myeloma, Burkitt's, mantle cell and follicular lymphomas; inversion 16; P53 (17p13); ATM (11q22); MLL (11q23); XX/XY - for sex-mismatched allografts
Methodology: Cultured bone marrow cells, bone marrow aspirate smears and peripheral blood smears can be analysed. Denaturation, hybridization and post-hybridization. Analysis using fluorescent microscope.
Turn around time: 4 days
Transit stability: Alert laboratory immediately if sample is to be cultured.
Comments: Transport medium available from the laboratory. Slides can be transported in a slide mailer.
